Empire, Burning Bushes

By Cire Trudon

The First Empire began on 18 May 1804, when Napoleon Bonaparte was proclaimed Emperor of the French, and ended in 1814, when he abdicated. Napoleon came to power in 1799 through a coup d'état. His strategic and military cunning enabled his armies to achieve many brilliant victories. His second wife, Archduchess Marie Louise of Austria, bore him a son: Napoleon François Joseph Charles Bonaparte, nicknamed "the Eaglet".
